The Details

Have you ever wanted to drive a train or be a conductor? Believe it or not, you can achieve your first certificate in less than three hours! This course takes place in class, online and onboard our trains.

Waterloo Central Railway has the only rail school in South Western Ontario, and we’re allowing approved applicants 18 years of age or older to become certified with the Ministry of Transportation through our recognized course for the positions of engineer, conductor, or safety crew.

Sign up and get hands-on experience on the WCR trains.

1. Will I get to actually drive the trains?
Yes! To become an engineer or conductor you will need to log hours on the train with our certified operators before you are certified. Once completed you can sign up whenever you wish to be one of our daily operators and take control of our running trains throughout the year.

2. What’s the difference between safety crew, engineer, and conductor?
Safety Crew - Loads passengers and helps in case of emergencies. 1 level
Engineer - In charge of operating the locomotive from the engine. 5 hours class time and hands-on operational time as needed.
Conductor - In charge of the movement of the locomotive and the staff onboard. 6 levels + 5 hours of class time and hands-on operational time as needed.

3. When does the class start/end?
You’re in charge of how long this course takes. When you sign up we will have you come to our location and do a walk through to introduce you to our equipment. You will be given an overview and books to take home with you. If you prefer, we can send you PDF versions of the booklets instead. We will send you the first level’s work and you can come in for your exam whenever you’re ready.
The course is a mixture of online and in class work as well as onboard training.

4. How do the exams work?
For each level there is an exam. Don’t worry - they’re all open-book, so you will always have your manual there just in case. It’s as simple as that! Exams are held at one of our locations and are supervised by our certified teachers when you are ready.

5. Do I get confirmation of my certifications?
You will get a certificate per each level you pass. Everyone will receive a frameable certification to hang in your home to show off and prove that you are certified to operate a train. We will also hang a copy of your certification up on our wall in a proud presentation of the graduates for our rail schoool.

6. What are the levels of the course and what is my commitment?
1. Passenger Handling, Safety & Emergency Procedure Rules (avg. 1h study time)
2. Work/Rest Rules For Railway Operating Employees (avg. 1h study time)
3. Freight & Passenger Train Brake Inspection & Safety Rules (avg. 4h study time)
4. Safety Critical, Safety Sensitive, Shop & Maintenance Positions (avg. 2h study time)
5. Canadian Rail Operating Rules (avg. 10h study time)
6. Safety Management System (avg. 10h study time)

7. I’m not yet sure this is for me. Is there any way to test it out before I commit?
We provide an introductory engineer experience which is a unique opportunity for prospective engineers that allows them to test drive our market train. This allows you to sit in the front seat of the train engine and see and feel the power in the palm of your hands. From only $99.99 - $149.99 you can take a test run in the engineer's seat and know immediately your level of interest and have a blast at the same time. These 2 hours will prove to excite and thrill beyond your imagination.
Sign up now!
This opportunity does not require any certifications as you will be operating under direct supervision and strict guidelines.
